[Aircraft Introduction] The Zero fighter (Type 0 Carrier Fighter) was a carrier-based fighter aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy (hereinafter referred to as the Navy) during World War II. Its abbreviation is Zero Fighter (Zero-sen, Reisen) (hereinafter referred to as Zero Fighter). With its long range of 2,200 km, heavy armament of two 20 mm cannons, and excellent maneuverability, it was superior to American and British fighters. However, from the middle of the war onward, it was at a disadvantage due to the establishment of anti-Zero tactics by the US Army and Navy and the introduction of new fighters such as the F4U Corsair and F6F Hellcat. Nevertheless, due to delays in the development of its successor, the Reppu, it remained the mainstay of the Japanese Navy Air Force until the end of the war. Although designed with an emphasis on dogfighting, it was also used as a fighter-bomber and kamikaze aircraft.
