■ What are cufflinks?
Many people have probably heard the word "cufflinks," but you probably don't often see people actually wearing them.
Cufflinks are an item used to fasten the sleeves of a dress shirt, and are said to have originated in 17th-century France. The name "cufflinks" comes from the fact that they fasten (link) the cuff (cuff). In Japan, they are commonly referred to simply as "cuffs."
■Types of dress shirts to use
The type of sleeve on your dress shirt is important when using cufflinks. Shirts that can accommodate cufflinks are either the "convertible cuff" or "double cuff" types shown in the picture. Most shirts sold in shirt shops and mass retailers these days are the "convertible cuff" type, which fastens with buttons, but can also be used with cufflinks. Double cuffs can only be fastened with cufflinks, and while they are not readily available, they give a stylish impression at parties and other formal occasions.
■Design
Cufflinks can be worn by anyone who owns a shirt with convertible cuffs. Stylish cuffs are eye-catching not only at parties but also in business settings, and they give off a sophisticated, mature impression.
■ Satin finish × Honing finish
This product features a cross design engraved on the metal fittings, with honing (sandblasting) applied to the grooves and a satin finish to the surface. Both are processes often applied to precious metals, reducing the surface gloss and creating a luxurious and understated look.
