A new series chronicling The Beatles' rare, unreleased live performances. This second volume is a collection of explosively popular live performances, including the band's legendary Washington DC concert on their first US visit, rare rehearsal recordings from the American TV show "The Ed Sullivan Show," and the 1964 NME Popularity Poll Concert!
First up is The Beatles' first US live performance, their Washington DC concert on February 11, 1964. This was the perfect time for "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" to reach number one in the US. This concert took place in the midst of Beatle fever, sparked by a live appearance on the hit American TV show "The Ed Sullivan Show" two days earlier.
The concert kicked off with George singing "Roll Over Beethoven," amid a roaring crowd and jelly beans being hurled onto the stage. Responding to the enthusiastic enthusiasm of the 8,000-strong audience, The Beatles delivered a particularly rocking performance with "Please Please Me," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "She Loves You." Ringo's drumming, in particular, was among the most intense in his live performance history, making this a historic concert etched in the memories of even the most avid Beatles fans.
This live performance has been featured in the video version of "Anthology," but the masters for the final two tracks, "Twist & Shout" and "Long Tall Sally," were previously thought to have been lost. However, thanks to new discoveries, the entire album has finally been released.
Five days later, The Ed Sullivan Show features a rare rehearsal live performance with an audience in a Miami hotel. Then, after returning to the UK in April, George performed at the British music magazine N.M.E.'s Popularity Poll Concert, which was around the time he began using a 12-string guitar. You can hear the particularly effective sound of the 12-string in "You Can't Do That."
This series features thoroughly researched and recorded unreleased Beatles live performances. Now, Vol. 1 is here, a collection of live performances from 1964, the first year of Beatle Fever. A Japanese commentary explaining the situation and background at the time is included on the inside jacket. Now available on digipak CD from Eternal Grooves.
