Journey, a rock band from San Francisco, has been active for over 30 years since its formation in 1973. Formed by Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie, who previously backed Carlos Santana, the band has undergone several lineup changes, disbandments, and reunions to reach its current state. From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, the band became chart regulars with a number of dramatic hits, ranging from powerful rock tunes to epic ballads. Their 1981 release "Escape" (#1 on the US charts) and 1983's "Frontiers" (#2 in the US, surpassing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" at the time) were global hits, including in Japan. Following this, the band went on hiatus for about 10 years from the late 1980s due to increasing solo careers and member changes, but they reunited in 1996. However, due to poor health, lead singer Steve withdrew from the tour and later officially left the band. The band relaunched with a new lineup in 2000. In 2004, their signature song "Open Arms" (from "Escape") was used as the theme song for the Japanese film "Umizaru," becoming a huge hit again.
