Tokoname is a traditional Japanese pottery production region with a history spanning 1,000 years.
Tokoname ware, Echizen ware, Seto ware, Shigaraki ware, Tamba ware, and Bizen ware are known as the "Six Ancient Kilns of Japan."
Teapot production began in Tokoname in the mid-Edo period, and the technique for the "shudei" teapot was subsequently established. Along with the shudei teapot, it has led the way in Japanese teapot production. Today, the region is known internationally as a major teapot production center, a rare find even on a global scale.
・Tokoname ware, known for its teapots, is said to produce tea with a mellow, delicious taste without any bitterness due to the high iron content of its clay.
・Tokoname teapots are made using the simple techniques of "sekki" and "yakishime," which simply involve firing the clay at high temperatures until it is hard. The more you use it, the more its luster will increase and its appearance will develop a deeper, more refined appearance.
- Tokoname-yaki teapots are individually sanded to "fit" the lid and teapot body, eliminating any loose lids. Light sanding marks will remain.
[How to Clean a Ceramesh Teapot]
After using a Ceramesh teapot, rinse it with water or hot water. We do not recommend using detergent or bleach.
Use a soft brush for the tea strainer and inside the spout. Allow to dry thoroughly after cleaning.
Soaking the teapot in water or hot water is effective for removing tea stains. We also recommend periodically boiling the teapot to disinfect it.
(When Using a Ceramesh Teapot)
The ceramic tea strainer "Ceramesh" was developed to allow you to enjoy the natural flavor of tea, without relying on metal tea strainers, while maintaining the tradition of traditional pottery tea utensils. Depending on the type of tea leaves, the strainer may clog or small pieces may get mixed into the tea. While you can eat the tea leaves as they flow out, if straining functionality is a priority, choose a teapot with a stainless steel tea strainer.
