This production of "Fidelio," directed by Claude Guth, was one of the most controversial opera productions at the 2015 Salzburg Festival, generating intense controversy. Guth is known for his innovative productions, such as his thorough reinterpretation of "The Flying Dutchman" at the 2003 Bayreuth Festival and the mysterious angel in "The Marriage of Figaro" at the 2006 Salzburg Festival. He also created a completely original stage for "Fidelio." The entire opera takes place in a space reminiscent of a large hall, where the story unfolds as a monolith-like object resembling the one in "2001: A Space Odyssey" rotates. Dialogue is essentially omitted, and sound effects such as groans and breathing are used between musical numbers. Furthermore, Leonore and Don Pizarro each have their own "shadow" alter egos. On the musical side, the cast includes Jonas Kaufmann's Florestan, the second Fidelio film to be released since the Harnoncourt/Zurich Opera recording, as well as Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, Polish-born bass-baritone Tomas Konieczny, who is also active as an actor, and veteran bass singer Hans-Pe The orchestra also features a full lineup of top-notch singers, including Peter König. The beautiful and powerful sound of the Vienna Philharmonic under Franz Welser-Möst's baton is also impressive. This was just before Welser-Möst announced his resignation from the Vienna State Opera, but his performance of "Leonore" Overture No. 3, performed as an intermezzo to Act 2, Scene 2, was unusually powerful for the usually cool-headed Welser-Möst, and drew thunderous applause from the full house.
