This catalog was published in conjunction with the Giorgio Morandi: Late Paintings exhibition held at the David Zwirner Gallery in New York in 2015. It focuses on Morandi's work from 1948 to 1964. This book offers a comprehensive look at Morandi's late works, which are both serene and dynamic, unwavering and avant-garde.
Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964) was an Italian painter born in Bologna. He lived there and in the nearby summer resort of Grizzana until his death in 1964. His work primarily consists of still lifes featuring vases, pitchers, vessels, bowls, and flowers, along with the occasional landscape. While Morandi's still lifes frequently feature similar motifs and compositions, the colors and placement of objects and tables vary subtly. This subtle ingenuity in variation is a hallmark of Morandi's paintings. He relentlessly and repeatedly explored the same subject, and his approach is compelling, as if he were devoting his entire life to one grand work.
