Beginning in the 1970s, Gilels began recording Beethoven's piano sonatas for Deutsche Grammophon. However, due to his death in 1985, the complete Beethoven sonatas were never completed. These nine analog recordings have been remastered in DSD and released on a two-disc SA-CD set. Gilels, who inherited the tradition of Russian pianism and was known for his "touch of steel," continues to garner immense acclaim for his dignified performances, blending a touch of artifice with refinement. This remaster is a fitting reissue for the Beethoven Year. (C)RS
